Edwardian watercolours from the Highlands of Scotland

Edwardian style - the epitome of controlled elegance. Mark Smith enjoys creating watercolours with a traditional Edwardian feel. These timeless pictures reflecting an unspoilt world are an expression of nostalgia, yet reflect everyday reality in the unspoilt clean lands in the far north of Scotland.

Mark Smith paints watercolours from his home base near the Royal Burgh of Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands. Dornoch is the jewel in the crown of the northern Highlands, and its unspoilt clean streets, Cathedral and adjacent Castle have inspired Mark Smith to adopt his timeless traditional watercolour style. This timeless, traditional watercolour painting style is ideally suited to capturing the unique light and landscape of this picturesque part of Scotland, where Madonna and Guy Ritchie chose to get married.

Dornoch Cathedral, where Madonna's child Rocco was christened, is one of Mark Smith's favourite watercolour subjects. High quality limited edition prints of the Cathedral are available from Mark.

Mark Smith - watercolour artist

"The great gulf which seems to exist between my own brand of painting, and the very modern technology that enables you to see the work here, was a divide I thought enormous; I had to admit that the leap across it couldn’t be put off any longer… and when I did jump I wished I’d done so before; it really is fun trying to make use of all this cyberspace (though we all know that computer time turns five minutes into an hour in the blink of the proverbial eye). If I’m honest, I guess I’d rather be drawing or painting - after all, the keyboard and screen don’t remain a novelty for long - but it’s great to be a part of the future as well as the past.

Reassuringly for me, the buzz and excitement of using brush and paper has definitely not worn off…

Sketching and painting in Yorkshire, England (my home county), Norfolk and especially Northern Scotland, I’ve also found inspiration in East and West Africa (Kenya and Cape Verde). Varied though these land and seascapes are, I feel that drawing and painting in water-colour somehow tie them together - and while the colour palette may be very different from place to place, the one thing common to all is the business of painting with light."

Mark Smith - versatile artist

While based in Dornoch in the North of Scotland, Mark Smith often paints scenes local to the area, and Caithness and Sutherland are not short of spectacularly interesting subjects and wild expressive skys to inspire him. His work, while often watercolour, can be as diverse as intricate pencil sketches to wild flowing oil paintings.

In accepting commissions, he often works from photos supplied by customers to create a painting of their house, garden, pet, or a portrait. He is not geographically limited either, his work covers his homeland of Yorkshire and Norfolk in England, and also locations worldwide, in Africa and the U.S.A. Wherever you are in the world, Mark Smith would be happy to accept commissions for watercolour work.
